Înregistrări VIDEO cu dezastrul produs în această săptămână de ruperea barajului iazului unei mine de aur din Canada. UPDATE: Proiectant comun cu cel de la Roșia Montană!
Proiectarea barajului iazului de decantare de la mina Mount Polley, care s-a prăbușit catastrofal vara trecută, nu a ținut cont de fundația instabilă pe care a fost amplasat, un defect care s-a agravat de-a lungul multor ani, în care barajul a fost extins în mod repetat pentru a găzdui un lac tot mai mare de deșeuri toxice, se arată într-un raport independent, publicat la începutul acestui an.
Raportul arată că proiectul nu a ținut cont de complexitatea și instabilitatea straturilor glaciare și pre-glaciare care se află la baza peretelui de reținere. Construirea pe un strat slab de depozite glaciare nedetectate la timp a fost apreciată de către anchetatori ca fiind ”o armă încărcată”. Conform acestora, construirea unei pante abrupte la dig, când acesta a fost din nou înălțat, a echivalat cu ”apăsarea pe trăgaciul armei”, respectiv la dezastrul din 4 august 2014.
Comentariul purtătorului de cuvânt al companiei minier, Steve Robertson, pe marginea raportului a fost sec: ”Construcția centrului nostru de depozitare a sterilului a fost întotdeauna în conformitate cu proiectul tehnic înregistrat(avizat – n.r.)”. Sau altfel spus, de vină nu e proiectantul, ci cel care a avizat proiectul!
Un alt studiu publicat de cercetătorii de la University of Northern British Columbia and the University of B.C. arată că efectele poluării produse de prăbușirea iazului de la mina Moun Polley se vor întinde pe o perioadă îndelungată, fiind necesară o monitorizare permanentă. Specialiștii de la cele două universități au analizat valul de deșeuri care a ajuns în Lacul Quesnel, un important habitat al somonului. Conform acestora, sterilul minier a fost spălat de râul Quesnel, dar o cantitate importantă s-a scufundat în partea de jos a lacului și s-ar putea infiltra de-a lungul anilor. ”Natura deșeurilor prezentă acum în Lacul Quesnel prezintă un pericol potențial prin conținutul de metal pentru creșterea, supraviețuirea și comportamentul speciilor de pești importante”, se arată în studiul care mai menționează riscurile pe termen lung pentru industria turismului, pescuitul și comerțul pe care se bazează zona.
La un an după dezastru, efectele acestuia nu sunt cunoscute încă pe deplin, alte studii, aflate în lucru, încercând să le evalueze.
