În cadrul unui discurs susţinut la o forum pe teme de politică externă, Sigmar Gabriel a afirmat că Uniunea Europeană trebuie să înveţe să-şi apere mai bine interesele şi să tragă concluziile necesare după relativa retragere a SUA de pe arena internaţională, sub conducerea preşedintelui Donald Trump.
”Statele Unite nu mai văd lumea ca o comunitate globală, ci ca o arenă de luptă în care fiecare trebuie să-şi caute propriul avantaj”, a declarat ministrul german de Externe, adăugând că Berlinul ar trebui să nu mai urmeze pur şi simplu liniile Washingtonului în materie de politică externă.
În plus, vicecancelarul german a precizat că îşi doreşte ca UE să devină un actor mai important, mai ales în contextul unilateralismului SUA, despre care Gabriel susţine că va rămâne o tendinţă centrală şi după ce Trump nu va mai fi preşedintele SUA.
