Scriitorul, publicistul și traducătorul moldovean Vlad Pohilă, a declarat la RFI că intelectualii din Republica Moldova au fost șocați și chiar revoltați de recenta declarație a ambasadorului american la Chișinău, potrivit căreia ”Republica Moldova nu este România”, ci ”o ţară multietnică cu oameni care vorbesc limbi diferite”.
”Ca om de litere eu văd această declarație ca pe o ingerință a unui diplomat în treburile țării noastre și mă mir că a făcut-o tocmai reprezentantul unui stat atât de mare și de puternic. Nu cred că asta era treaba lui. Putea să spună așa ceva cuiva la un ceai, la o cafea, nu așa, în mod public. O reacție destul de maladivă pentru mai mulți intelectuali, care au fost chiar șocați și revoltați. Și asta pentru că ideea reunirii pentru noi nu înseamnă neapărat reunirea statală, administrativă. Eu unul optez pentru ideea reunirii spirituale dintre popoarele noastre, o reunire care s-a fisurat grav de tot și este important să o reparăm, să o refacem. Așadar vorbim despre o reunire într-un sens mai larg. Trebuie să știți că mulți dintre cei care vorbesc despre reunirea unui stat românesc speculează, mulți o declară dar în realitate nu o doresc și mă refer aici la politicieni. Dar pe de altă parte aceasta este doleanța sinceră a multor, multor intelectuali, a multor țărani, a multor oameni cu pregătire medie, care văd avantajele reunirii. Și mă refer aici la reunire nu în primul rând în sensul reunirii cu România, ci reunire cu Europa, revenirea la Europa, pentru că noi am fost rupți de acest spațiu și acum suntem pe orbita rusească, pe orbita orientală dacă vreți, care, orice s-ar spune, ne este străină și nu ne este benefică”, a spus sciitorul.
