Administrația Obama a lansat recent un plan de protejare a mai multe râuri şi suprafețe de apă , pentru a creşte siguranța resurselor de apă pentru 117 milioane de americani.
Protejarea resurselor de apă în SUA nu este un moft al ecologiştilor sau vreo excitare a unor eco-anarhişti. După ani de zile în care firmele de gaze de şist deversau reziduurile în râuri, cercetători chimişti de la Carnegie Mellon au constatat că reziduurile generau bromuri cangerigene în apa potabilă a locuitorilor din Pennsylvania- articolul aici.
După apariția acestui raport, guvernatorul republican Tom Corbett, altfel prieten al industriei, a trebuit să interzică deversarea rezidurilor din exploatarea gazelor de şist în statul Pennsylvania.
