Preşedintele României Klaus Iohannis a demis-o luni pe Laura Codruţa Kövesi din funcţia de procuror general al DNA, el afirmând prin purtătorul de cuvânt că execută doar o decizie a Curţii Constituţionale. Demiterea lui Kövesi a ţinut capul de afiş al discuţiilor publice din ultima lună. Preşedintele PSD Liviu Dragnea a anunţat că discuţiile despre suspendarea preşedintelui Klaus Iohannis vor continua, în ciuda faptului că şeful statului a suspendat-o din funcţie pe Laura Codruţa Kövesi, aşa cum ceruse Curtea Constituţională. Dacă nu ar fi demis-o, PSD ar fi avut un motiv pentru a-l suspenda pe Iohannis.
Nu atât suspendarea procurorului-şef anticorupţie a surprins, ci maniera în care aceasta s-a întâmplat. Şeful statului nu a ieşit personal să explice această decizie – cea mai importantă din cariera lui de preşedinte – ci şi-a trimis un purtătorr de cuvânt să facă public anunţul. Procurorul Anca Jurma a fost delegată de procurorul general Augustin Lazăr să preia interimatul la şefia DNA. Ministerul Justiţiei a anunţat că organizează în perioada 9 iulie –
30 iulie 2018 selecţia procurorilor în vederea efectuării propunerii de numire în funcţia vacantă de procuror-şef al Direcţiei Naţionale Anticorupţie. Preşedintele PSD Liviu Dragnea a declarat că subiectul privind suspendarea preşedintelui va continua în partid şi în coaliţie: „Din păcate, preşedintele arată de mult că nu respectă Constituţia, nu-şi respectă atribuţiile, nu mai are puterea să fie un preşedinte deasupra partidelor, fără interese partinice, care să fie un mediator între puterile statului”.
